The 5 Best Puzzle Toys to Keep Your Dog Busy All Day

Dec

A great deal of what gets called bad behaviour is a dog with nothing to do. Destructive chewing, barking at nothing and general restlessness very often trace back to a brain that has had no work.

Puzzle toys fix that cheaply, because they turn food into a problem. Here are the five kinds worth owning, and what each is actually good for.

The stuffable rubber toy

The classic, and still the most useful single item you can buy.

  • Fill it with kibble mixed into something soft, such as wet food, plain yoghurt or xylitol-free peanut butter. Freeze it overnight and a ten-minute toy becomes an hour.
  • Solid natural rubber stands up to serious chewers and gives under the tooth, so it does not risk fractures the way hard nylon does.
  • The uneven shape means the dog has to keep repositioning it, which is most of the work.

The freezing is the part people skip and it roughly triples how long it lasts.

Treat-dispensing balls

Hollow balls with an adjustable opening that release kibble as they are pushed around.

  • Best used to replace the bowl entirely. A dog that works for dinner eats more slowly and finishes with something achieved.
  • Good for fast eaters, and useful for bloat-prone breeds where gulping is a genuine risk.
  • Start with the hole wide open. A puzzle that produces nothing for five minutes gets abandoned, and then it is a dead toy.

Sliding and flip-lid puzzle boards

Boards with compartments hidden under sliding discs, pegs or flaps, which have to be moved in the right way.

  • A focused, quiet indoor activity, and a good one to do alongside your dog rather than leaving them to it.
  • Begin with the simplest level and only move up once they are solving it easily. Frustration is the main failure here.
  • These are supervised toys. Most are plastic and a determined dog will chew a board rather than solve it.

Snuffle mats

A fabric mat with layers and strips to hide food in, so the dog has to work through it with their nose.

  • Scent work is unusually tiring for dogs, and a snuffle mat is the easiest way to get it indoors.
  • Low impact, so it suits older dogs, dogs recovering from injury, and anxious dogs who need something calming rather than exciting.
  • It washes, which matters more than it sounds once it has been used a few dozen times.

Homemade ones

You do not have to buy any of this.

  • A muffin tin with a treat in each cup and a tennis ball over each one. Simple, effective, and most dogs solve it the first time and enjoy it anyway.
  • Treats rolled loosely in a towel, which they have to unwrap. Supervise this one, because some dogs shred and swallow the towel.
  • Cardboard boxes inside cardboard boxes with food in the middle.

Making them work

  • Rotate. Any puzzle becomes routine, and a toy put away for a fortnight comes back genuinely interesting.
  • Take the food out of their daily ration rather than adding it. Enrichment that quietly doubles a dog’s calories is not an improvement.
  • Supervise anything that can be chewed apart, and retire it once pieces start coming off.

The general rule is that fifteen minutes of problem-solving settles most dogs more effectively than another half hour of walking, and it is a great deal easier to do in the rain.
