Hedgehogs as Pets: What to Expect from a Prickly Pal

Hedgehogs photograph as cuddly and are not, particularly. The African pygmy hedgehog is the one kept as a pet, and it is a solitary, nocturnal animal that has to be persuaded into a relationship rather than born into one.

That is not a reason to avoid them. It is the thing to know before you choose one, because most disappointment with pet hedgehogs comes from expecting a small cat.

What the animal is actually like

In the wild they live alone and meet only to breed. A pet hedgehog carries that with it, so shy and defensive is the normal starting point, not a sign that something is wrong. When worried, they curl into a spined ball around the soft underside, and there is no arguing with a hedgehog that has decided to do this.

Trust comes from repetition and a gentle hand. Many learn an owner’s scent and voice and become noticeably more relaxed and curious about being handled. Some never become affectionate in the way people hope. Both outcomes are common, and you do not get to pick which one you get.

They sleep through the day and come alive in the evening. If you are out at work and home at night, that schedule fits you better than most pets manage.

Housing, and the one that catches people out

  • Floor space of at least 2 feet by 4 feet, with a solid bottom. Wire floors injure their feet.
  • Temperature held between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. This is the important one. Let the room drop below that and a hedgehog will try to hibernate, which for a pet hedgehog is dangerous rather than natural.
  • A solid-surfaced wheel. Wire wheels cause serious leg and foot injuries and there is no safe version of one.
  • At least one enclosed hideout. They are prey animals and need somewhere to stop being visible.
  • Bedding of recycled paper, aspen shavings or fleece liners. Cedar and pine are a respiratory risk.

Feeding

They are insectivores in the wild and do well in captivity on a varied diet that is high in protein and fairly low in fat. A good dry cat food is the usual staple, at roughly 30 percent protein and under 15 percent fat.

On top of that, insects do the real work: mealworms, crickets and dubia roaches, live or freeze dried. Small amounts of cooked chicken, scrambled egg, apple or banana are safe as treats. Obesity is one of the most common problems in pet hedgehogs, so treats stay treats.

Health, and the vet question

They live around four to six years. Find an exotics vet before you get one, not after something goes wrong. Ordinary small animal practices often will not see them, and that is a bad thing to discover on a Sunday.

  • Obesity, from overfeeding and not enough wheel.
  • Dental disease, including tartar and gum problems.
  • Skin trouble, usually mites or fungal infections.
  • Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome, a progressive neurological disease that the species is prone to and that has no cure.
  • Tumours, which are common in older hedgehogs.

Who they suit

An adult who is home in the evening, can hold a room at a steady temperature, and wants an unusual, quiet, self-contained animal to get to know slowly.

They are not low effort, whatever the size suggests, and they are a poor match for a household that wants a pet to be awake and sociable on demand. Meet the temperature requirement and the evening schedule, and they are genuinely good company on their own terms.
